NEW INFO: Four-Year-Old In Critical Condition After Falling From Havelock Apartment Window

A four-year-old girl is in critical condition after police said she fell from a second story window.

Havelock Police Chief Wayne Cyrus says the accident happened around 2:15 p.m. Monday at the Pine Villa Apartments on Brown Boulevard.

Chief Cyrus said the girl was playing with other children at the window sill on the second story when she fell backwards through a window screen. Cyrus says her mother was home when the accident happened. She was downstairs, while three children played upstairs.

Lt. Brian Woods says while the mother and grandfather were downstairs, the children were playing upstairs. He said there is a bunk bed by the window, and the child climbed on the bed and then into the window sill.

Woods says another child told her to get down, and that's when the screen gave way. The child landed on a concrete slab.

Woods says the air conditioning wasn't on in the apartment and says this was just a horrible, tragic accident.

The girl was flown to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville Monday. Tuesday, she was listed in critical condition, according to Chief Cyrus.

According to the American Public Health Association, falls are the leading cause of non-fatal injuries for all children ages 0-19 years old.

The Centers For Disease Control and Prevention reports falls are also the leading cause of non-fatal emergency room visits.
