Former School Custodian Released On Bond After Threat Claims

A former high school custodian was released from jail this afternoon, a day after his arrest for threatening to kill his former boss.

Jermaine Hardy was charged Monday afternoon with making a false report of mass violence on education property. The Winterville man is a former custodian at D.H. Conley High School.

Sheriff Neil Elks says in the email Hardy threatened to shoot Principal Mary Carter, saying "you and your buddy, Mr. Barber, are in serious trouble." Lynn Barber is the school's assistant principal.

The email prompted an increase in security at the school Monday.

The school system says Hardy was fired from his job May 21st after being suspended with pay in April. They said the man violated board policies on professional ethics and the work week, but gave no additional clarification.

A District Court judge this morning reduced Hardy's bond from $50,000 to $10,000 during the man's first court appearance.

Previous Story

A former employee at a Pitt County high school has been charged after deputies say a threatening email was sent to the principal.

Deputies say Jermaine Hardy was arrested Monday afternoon with making a false report of mass violence on education property. Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Christy Wallace says the Winterville man is a former custodian at D.H. Conley High School.

Extra security was present at the school after the principal received the email. Parents were notified via a text alert, while authorities say there were no problems at the school today.

Pitt County Schools says Hardy started at Conley in 2008 and was fired at the end of the school year in June.

The man's bond was set at $50,000, and he remains in jail.
