The case will go on against a former sheriff accused of assaulting his wife, despite her emotional words during a hearing in court.

Former Pitt County Sheriff Mac Manning was granted the right to go home Wednesday, during his bond modification hearing.

Manning is charged with misdemeanor assault on a female.

The former sheriff's original bond said he had to stay away from his Mulberry Lane home, which he shares with his wife.

Gayle Lynch Manning spoke in court, saying she never would have contacted police and that her husband has never laid a hand on her in all their years of marriage.

Manning is due back in court July 23rd.

A former sheriff will be able to go home, a week after being arrested for assaulting his wife.

Mac Manning, who was Pitt County sheriff until 2010, appeared before a district court judge this morning for a bond modification hearing.

Manning was charged last Tuesday on one count of assault on a female, a misdemeanor.

Manning's original bond said he had to stay away from his Mulberry Lane home, which he shares with his wife. After hearing from the victim, the judge agreed to modify Manning's bond.

The judge heard emotional testimony from Gail Lynch Manning, who said she never should have called police last Monday. She said her husband "never has laid a hand on me" in all their years of marriage. She told the judge it was just a husband and a wife having an argument, she got very angry and in the midst of that anger she called police.

Manning's wife called him "a fine, Godly, upstanding Christian man."

An arrest warrant says the former sheriff slapped his wife's right hand twice "causing bruising, swelling and blood blisters."

The 56-year-old Manning was sheriff for 12 years. He lost four years ago in a bitter primary battle against current Sheriff Neil Elks.
