Police say four people have been arrested, including a Winterville couple, in a scheme to embezzle hundreds of thousands of dollars from an eye care center.
The two year investigation by Greenville police wrapped up Friday with the arrest of three former employees of Eastern Carolina Eye Center on Stantonsburg Road, and the husband of one of those former employees.
Sabrina Fontana, Kevin Fontana, Lorraine Decuzzi, and Mary Jones face a total of 58 charges.
Police say more than $250,000 was taken from the practice.
In June 2012, Dr. James Holland reported to police that an audit showed his office manager, Sabrina Fontana, used funds to increase her salary and benefits during a five year period. The woman is also accused of using a company credit card to pay for numerous personal purchases totaling $158,216.72.
Fontana is also charged with diverting $23,800 to her husband, making it appear he was on their payroll.
Police say Decuzzi and Jones allowed the office manager to substantially increase their pay and benefits without approval to the tune of $31,653.74.
Additional employees have also been identified, and possible more charges are pending, according to a police department news release.
