A former tax clerk for the city of New Bern is accused of embezzling near $10,000 in city funds while on the job.
Susan Sutton of Vanceboro was arrested Tuesday by the State Bureau of Investigation. She is charged with two felony counts of embezzlement by a public officer or trustee.
District Attorney Scott Thomas says the 28-year-old woman is accused of taking the city's money between March 2011 and May of last year. Thomas says the city notified his office last summer about missing money from the tax office and he contacted the SBI to investigate.
Sutton appeared this morning for her first appearance and has a June 5th court date in New Bern.
The city says Sutton was fired from her job on May 29th, 2012.
