A local man with an impressive rise to college football fame will be honored with a marker in the city he called home.
The Jacksonville Onslow Chamber of Commerce in Jacksonville is starting its next phase of the African-American Trail. The trail will focus on contributions made to African-American community throughout the county.
A marker honoring former Notre Dame Football coach Lionel Tyrone Willingham will be revealed.
Although he was originally born in Kinston, Willingham grew up in Jacksonville. He went on to play football for Michigan State. Willingham also left his mark at schools, such as Stanford University and the University of Washington, where he coached the sport.
Willingham is the first to be featured for the trail.
The ceremony honoring his new marker will be 3 p.m. Friday at 36 Kerr Street Recreation Center.
