Ferry Crew Rescues Raleigh Couple In Pamlico Sound

Two crewmembers from a state ferry rescued a Raleigh couple after their sailboat capsized in the rough waters of the Pamlico Sound.

The state Ferry Division says John and Renee Hoffman last night were sailing in Big Foot Slough, just off Ocracoke, when winds suddenly picked up.

Fortunately, Motor Vessel Cedar Island was nearby and the captain was able to pull the ferry so they could launch its 16-foot rescue boat. Seas were 4 to 5 feet and winds at 30 knots at the time.

"They risked their lives to get those two people out of the water," said Captain Steven Goodwin. "They deserve all the credit. They performed the rescue at night in some of the worst conditions possible."

The Hoffmans were safely placed on board and the ferry returned to Ocracoke where they were given food, dry clothes and a chance to contact their family.

Renee Hoffman used to be public information officer for the Department of Crime Control and Public Safety.
