Chowan County schools and the local community college are closed after the sheriff's office received a letter threatening to blow up bridges, the courthouse, schools and other buildings.
Sheriff Dwayne Goodwin said his office received a letter containing the threats Monday morning. He says the hand-written, unsigned letter didn't include a motive but did list the specific times for the attacks. He declined to disclose those times.
The writer threatened to blow up the two main bridges in the county, the Chowan River Bridge and the Albemarle Sound Bridge.
Nothing suspicious was discovered during searches Monday of the courthouse and schools and inspections of the bridges.
Officials say Chowan schools and the College of the Albemarle's Edenton campus closed Tuesday.

School officials with the Edenton-Chowan Board of Educations said all four schools in their district were closed Tuesday morning under the advisement of the sheriff's office.
Assist to school superintendent, Carrie Baker, confirmed with WITN that White Oak Elementary, D.F. Walker Elementary, Chowan Middle, and John A. Holmes High schools were closed Tuesday morning.
Baker said the alert below was sent to parents and staff members around 6 a.m. Tuesday via phone call, text, and email:
"On Monday we received information from our local Sheriff's Department about a bomb threat to our area bridges and schools. While working with local law enforcement to contain the investigation, we were advised to delay schools to protect our students and staff. Due to the status of the investigation, and after advisement from our local law enforcement, we have decided to close school for students and staff for Tuesday October 8th."
Answering messages at particular schools note they are closed Tuesday and advise callers to stay tuned to local TV and radio news outlets for more information.
No word yet from the Chowan County Sheriff's office on the current investigation.
