Edenton Celebrates Life Of Slave Harriet Jacobs

The life of a slave who grew up to be an abolitionist and writer is the subject of symposium in her hometown of Edenton.

The event scheduled for Saturday at Edenton United Methodist Church Family Life Center celebrates the life of Harriet Jacobs, who was born Feb. 11, 1813, almost 200 years ago.

Her memoir, "Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl," was one of the first narratives about the struggle for freedom by female plantation slaves in the South. In her book, Jacobs tells of living in a tiny garret above her grandmother's house for almost seven years before she escaped Edenton on a boat to Philadelphia.

The symposium is part of the 300th anniversary celebration of the town of Edenton.
