ECU Student Dies Following Accident On Highway 264

The Highway Patrol says that an ECU student was killed Saturday, following an accident on Highway 264.

Trooper Greg Koonce says that 20-year-old Robert Perez of Centreville, Virginia was traveling east on Highway 264 around 5:20 a.m., about a mile from Greenville, when he ran off the road through the median and ended up in the westbound lane. Officials believe Perez was either getting out of his car or had gotten out of his car when he was struck by an SUV. Trooper Koonce says a car coming up on the accident struck the SUV, followed by a 3rd car that swerved to avoid the accident and struck Perez who was lying in the roadway.

Perez would die later that afternoon at Vidant Medical Center.

Officials say that there will be no charges in the accident.

A toxicology report is pending on Perez.

The driver of the SUV was treated and released from the Vidant Medical Center.

The accident scene took 4 hours to clear. Red Oak Fire Department, Bell Arthur, and Greenville EMS responded to the scene.
