NEW INFO: Body Of ECU Student Recovered After Deadly Rip Currents

Officials say that the body of an ECU student has been recovered, after he was pulled out to sea by a rip current Saturday.

Pine Knoll Shores Mayor Ken Jones says that the body of 19-year-old Braxton Horton was found around 7:00 p.m. Sunday about 200-yards east from where he was last seen. Horton had been swimming with friends on a section of Pine Knoll Shores beach.

Mayor Jones says that the body was found by a man walking his dog.

ECU says Horton, who lived in Raleigh, just completed his first year at East Carolina. A biology professor described Horton as a very promising young student with a very good work ethic.

An ECU student caught in a rip current and now feared dead has been identified by Pine Knoll Shores officials.

Mayor Ken Jones says that 19-year-old Braxton Horton of Raleigh went missing after being caught up in a rip current.

Mayor Jones says that they are continuing to use a jet ski in recovery efforts while also patrolling the beach a bit more heavily.

Jones says the Camp Seagull employee was swimming with 4 other co-workers when the rip current caught Hamilton.

Officials say that a 19-year-old ECU student and Camp Seagull employee is likely dead after going missing while swimming at a Pine Knoll Shores beach.

Mayor Ken Jones says that the man went missing around 4:37 p.m. when he was in the water near 618 Salter Path Road with 4 other Camp Seagull co-workers. Jones says that the fellow swimmers tried unsuccessfully to help the man who was caught by a rip current.

The search is now in recovery mode, meaning the man is believed dead.

2 jet skis were being used this evening to look for the man.

Mayor Jones says that the man was not an experienced swimmer.

Officials are not ready to release the person's name.

Camp Seagull is a summer camp located in Arapahoe in Pamlico County.

The 5 co-workers were not there Saturday as part of the camp.
