An Elizabeth City State University student whose bid for city council was originally rejected by the local elections board has apparently won one of two seats in the district which includes the school.
According to unofficial returns, Montravias King received 38 percent of the vote to lead the slate of candidates for the two 4th Ward City Council seats. The other seat went to Darius J. Horton, who captured 30 percent of the vote and finished second behind King.
Final results will be certified Oct. 15.
The North Carolina Board of Elections voted unanimously last month that King could run for the city council. The vote reversed an earlier decision made by the GOP majority on the Pasquotank County Board of Elections, a move that gained national attention.
