Previous Story

A mother and her young son were killed last night in a head-on crash outside of Rocky Mount.

State troopers say 21-year-old Lashunqua Cooper, and her son, Jiquel Copeland, died after their Honda was struck by a pickup truck.

It happened right before 9:30 p.m. on Highway 301 South, just outside of the city limits.

Troopers say the driver of the pickup, Stacey Deans, crossed the center line and hit the woman's car.

They say the child was in a child safety seat in the backseat at the time of the crash. Troopers say alcohol is suspected in the case, but they're waiting for blood tests to return.
