A New York City police officer accused of plotting to kill and eat women wants to convince a jury that it was all fantasy.
Opening statements in the bizarre case against Gilberto Valle are set for Monday in federal court in Manhattan.
Prosecutors plan to use emails and other evidence to show that the 28-year-old cooked up dangerous schemes to abduct women and devour them. They say he even drew up a list of targets using a law enforcement database.
But Valle's lawyers deny he's a would-be killer. They're expected to call expert witnesses to describe how he lived in a secret fantasy world where people role play and fantasize about cannibalism, but never act on it.
