DMV Drops Plans For Pink Stripe On Immigrant Licenses

The North Carolina DMV has dropped plans to put a bright pink stripe on driver licenses issued to some illegal immigrants.

Instead, the DMV will put in red letters "LEGAL PRESENCE NO LAWFUL STATUS" on driver licenses for immigrants brought to the U.S. as children.

The Obama administration's Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program grants valid federal work permits to qualified applicants brought to the U.S. as children without legal authorization. In North Carolina, those who have "legal presence" are qualified to get driver licenses even though they may not have "lawful status".

The state had come under criticism from the ACLU and Latino groups for the pink stripe, and some called it a scarlet letter for the immigrants.

In announcing that applications would be accepted starting Monday, the DMV did not explain why it changed the design of the licenses.
