NEW INFO: Missing Pitt County Swimmer's Body Recovered

The search for a missing swimmer has ended. Falkland Fire Department Chief William Proctor told WITN that 51-year-old Kenneth Skaggs' body was found around 12 o'clock Saturday afternoon. He said the body was found "maybe 20 feet down from the pier he dived off of in the Tar River."

Proctor said the coroner has taken the body to Greenville where an autopsy will be done.

He also said the sheriff's office has been in contact with the victim's family.

Skaggs went missing on the Fourth of July when he was swimming at a Falkland boat ramp, not far from Highway 43.

Firefighters said they spent hours on Friday searching for a missing man after he took a swim near a Falkand dock and never came back up.

Falkand Fire Department Chief William Proctor told WITN the search for 51-year-old Kenneth Skaggs has now turned into a recovery mission.

Family members told WITN Skaggs was with relatives, including his daughter, as they went for a Fourth of July swim Friday afternoon at a Falkand boat ramp, not far from Highway 43.

Rescuers said the 51-year-old took a dive from the ramp, swam nearly 20 feet into the water and turned around to come back.

Chief Proctor said family members turned away for a moment and looked back to find Skaggs was nowhere to be seen.

Crews from three area fire departments searched for Skaggs until about 9:30 Friday night and hit the water again around 5 a.m. Saturday, according to Proctor.

At the time of the Friday search, Chief Proctor said he estimated the current to be flowing at nearly five to six miles per hour. During the Saturday morning search, he observed the water had risen by nearly a foot and a half.

Search crews were joined by dive teams as the efforts continue Saturday.
