Authorities say an Asheville midwife facing a murder charge in the death of an infant she was helping deliver didn't arrive to assist in the birth until two days after the mother's water broke.
Court records obtained by The Asheville Citizen-Times (http://avlne.ws/16rKSgX ) show that police think 44-year-old Tina Bailey also told the mother to lie about when her water broke when she finally went to the hospital last summer.
Police say a woman who helped Bailey with the birth said the midwife was a bully and only did things like check the fetal heart rate when the parents asked.
Authorities say the baby died in part after inhaling fluid from a bowel movement that often happens when a fetus is under medical distress.
Bailey refused to talk to the newspaper.
