Congressman Jones Calls For Meetings With DOD On Newport Wind Project

Third District Republican Congressman Walter Jones has requested a meeting with Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense John Conger to discuss the Defense Department's review of the proposed Mill Pond wind turbine project in Newport.

The project has prompted local concern about the possibility that the turbines would hinder the flight paths of aircraft flying out of Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point and MCAS New River, among other issues.

Under both federal and state law, the Department of Defense must review such projects, taking into consideration the possible impact on military installations, and make a recommendation regarding approval - a process completed by a Mitigation Response Team (MRT).

Since the Mill Pond project's MRT is scheduled to meet in North Carolina next week, Congressman Jones also asked Deputy Assistant Secretary Conger to allow representatives of the communities surrounding Cherry Point, New River, and the Mill Pond site to attend the meeting.
