Body of Pilot Recovered From Sunken Aircraft; Victim Identified

Authorities say a Raleigh man was killed when his small plane crashed into the Croatan Sound Sunday morning.

Dare County Regional Airport Director Robert Benson told WITN the body of the pilot was found in the plane's cockpit. This afternoon the body was recovered from the aircraft, which sunk a mile away from the airfield.

The pilot has been identified as Greg Carlisle.

The airport director said the pilot landed just short of the airfield in foggy conditions while there was a low cloud deck. Carlisle was flying a 1978 Piper Seneca from Raleigh.

On Sunday, officials said the plane crashed while trying to land around 11:45 Sunday morning, and a woman was rescued following the crash and taken to Outer Banks Hospital.
