Closed Pitt County Building Will Reopen Next Week

A county office building, that's been closed since the first of the month, will reopen next week.

Pitt County's Development Services Building on West 5th Street was closed February 1st because of a strange odor. Those that work in environmental health, planning, permitting, veteran services and engineering were moved into another building while tests were done.

County Manager Scott Elliott says the building is now safe for employees and the public to re-enter. He said limited asbestos abatement was performed in the building, air quality was tested as well as addressing the building's exterior for moisture control.

Elliott says before employees move back in, the county plans to thoroughly clean the inside of the building. The county manager said other complaints about rodents and ventilation in bathrooms were unfounded, according to OSHA.
