Civil War Ordnance Found In Pamlico County

A military bomb squad has taken a Civil War-era explosive found in North Carolina waters

The New Bern Sun Journal reports a residential street was closed Thursday as experts from the Cherry Point Marine Corps Air Station were called to the scene.

The object was removed from a sports utility vehicle and taken to the Marine base for disposal.

New Bern city spokeswoman Colleen Roberts says the device about the size of a soft-drink bottle and weighed about five pounds. It was covered in barnacles and oysters. Roberts says it was found two days ago in the water off the town of Oriental and was brought to New Bern.

One of the men who pulled it from the water called police to have it checked out.
