Checking On Shackleford Banks Horses Following Hurricane Arthur

The Foundation for Shackleford Horses is checking on the well being of the wild horses on Shackleford Banks following Hurricane Arthur last week.

The eye of the hurricane passed directly over Cape Lookout National Seashore last Thursday.

On its Facebook page, the Foundation for Shackleford Horses posted, "Will begin counting horses on Monday. Arthur wasn't as bad as many past storms, and the horses are canny about getting to forests and high ground. It may take a couple of weeks to account for all of them, as they have about ten-miles of island to move about in. Hopefully, all is well. We may even have a new little face after the storm."

The National Park Service says Shackleford Banks is home to more than 110 wild horses and is one of the few places in the eastern United States where wild horses can still be seen.
