KINGS MOUNTAIN, N.C. (AP) - For years, the Catawba Indian Nation has been wrestling with South Carolina over its bid to build a gambling casino that could generate millions in revenue and create thousands of jobs.
Now the South Carolina-based tribe is exploring plans to build a casino along a busy interstate highway just across the state line in North Carolina.
But North Carolina lawmakers are promising to fight the proposal.
House Speaker Pro Temp Paul Stam says he's worried that if the state approves the plan, other tribes from outside North Carolina will try to open casinos in that state.
Cleveland County, N.C., leaders say local officials met with an adviser to Gov. Pat McCrory in July to talk about the tribe's proposal for a casino near Kings Mountain. The McCrory administration later played down the idea.
