Car Runs Off Highway, Down Embankment Near Bridge

Police are investigating how a car ran off a busy Greenville street, landing down an embankment near the Tar River.

At first rescue crews thought the vehicle went off the Greenville Boulevard bridge that spans the Tar River. Instead, the car left the road near the second bridge on Greenville Boulevard, that spans only a culvert.

Police say the Volkswagen Beetle was southbound and drove off the road. It landed some 15 feet down the embankment.

The driver appeared to be okay, just shaken up, according to officers. She was taken to Vidant Medical Center as a precaution.

The is no word yet on why the vehicle left the road.
