The Greenville Police Department has received ballistic vests for all six of its K9s thanks to a nationwide Groupon event that raised more than $335,000.00.
The Greenville Police Department also purchased a badge for each K9.
The Groupon Grassroots campaign to outfit police K9's with bullet and stab protective vests ran February 15th through March 5th.
Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. was the nationwide non-profit organization and charity partner selected to participate.
All of the tax deductible donations made through the secure website were allocated to purchase ballistic vests for our four-legged crime fighters who put their lives on the line for the community and their partner.
In North Carolina, K9s are considered full-fledged police officers. They find themselves in the same situations and are faced with the same dangers as human officers.
Vested Interest in K9s embroidered all of the Greenville Police Department's vests with the sentiment, "In Memory of K9 Rocco, Pittsburgh Bureau of Police". Rocco was stabbed in the line of duty in January of this year. He was assisting in the capture of a convicted sex offender, who was wanted for a violent home invasion. The blade reportedly sliced through six inches of back muscle, puncturing one of Rocco's kidneys and chipping bone from his spine.
Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. will be providing more than 350 law enforcement dogs nationwide with the protective body armor in memory of K9 Rocco.
Through private and corporate sponsorships, Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. has provided more than 1,047 law enforcement dogs in 39 states with protective vests since 2009.
Each specially-fitted vest costs $950.00 and has a 5 year warranty.
