Butterfield Asks FAA To Keep Airport Control Towers In Kinston & New Bern Open

An Eastern Carolina congressman wants the Federal Aviation Administration to restore funding for air traffic controllers at two local airports.

Congressman G.K. Butterfield wrote to FAA Administrator Michael Huerta, urging him to do what he can to continue controllers being staffed at New Bern's Coastal Carolina Regional Airport and at the Kinston Regional Jetport.

The air traffic controllers at those two airports are among 200 losing control towers due to sequester cuts.

The airports can remain open since many planes can land without the help of air traffic controllers.

The cuts are supposed to take place April 7th.

Previous Story

Federal budget cuts will close air traffic control towers at five North Carolina airports, including two here in the east.

The Federal Aviation Administration says New Bern and Kinston are among 173 small and medium size airports that will lose their towers on April 7th.

Another 16 control towers will close September 30th because of sequestration cuts that began March 1st.

The airports can remain open since many planes can land without the help of air traffic controllers.

Other North Carolina airports impacted are in Concord, Hickory, and Winson-Salem.
