Police in Chincoteague, Virginia tell WITN the autopsy for a Carteret County man whose body washed ashore in Virginia shows that he likely died of drowning.
Officer Jessica Thomas of the Chincoteague Police Department said on Wednesday morning that preliminary autopsy results show that 56-year-old Carl Lewis of Beaufort died of possible drowning. Investigators said the man was known to have a heart condition, but Officer Thomas said according to the medical examiner, it would be hard to tell if that heart condition played a factor in his death.
Thomas said that Lewis was a commercial fisherman in the area, last working aboard the Susan Rose. Thomas added Lewis was last accounted for on Monday night, during dinner at a local restaurant.
Lewis' body washed ashore along the waterfront town in Virginia on Tuesday morning.
