Road Re-Opens After Big Rig Splits In Two In Grifton

A big split this morning tied up traffic in one Eastern Carolina town.

Highland Avenue, which is the main way into Grifton from Highway 11 is back open after the trailer of an 18-wheeler split in two causing the road to shutdown for several hours.

Police say they believe a possible load malfunction caused the problem.

The 18-wheeler was carrying 20,000 pounds of material used to make horse feed, and police say crews had to cut open the trailer and unload it before a wrecker could remove the big rig from the highway.

The driver says he just left a company in Grifton and was heading to Kenansville.

No one was injured and the Highway Patrol Motor Carrier Division cited the driver for two violations.
