ECU Bus Driver 'Off The Road' After Morning Accident

The driver of an ECU transit bus has been charged after five people were injured in a chain reaction accident this morning near campus. Late this afternoon the university said that driver has been removed from service, pending an investigation.

The crash happened at 10th and Maple streets around 11:40 a.m.

Greenville police say a vehicle was turning into Newman Catholic Campus Ministry and two other vehicles had stopped. Police say the approaching ECU bus crashed into one vehicle, which then struck the other vehicle in front of it.

Five people were taken to Vidant Medical Center with unknown injuries. None of the eight people on the bus were injured.

The bus driver, who is a student, was charged with failure to reduce speed.

Police said the bus driver said he was looking in the rear view mirror and then noticed the stopped vehicles in front of him.

“The driver of the bus is a student employee,” said Wood Davidson, ECU transit director. “An investigation by our operations and safety units is under way and the employee will be subject to our personnel polices as appropriate based on the findings of the investigation.”
