One patient has been killed and three others suffered slight injuries in a fire at Durham Regional Hospital this morning.

The fire was initially reported as an explosion on the hospital's sixth floor around 2:15 a.m.

Hospital operations chief Katie Galbraith says officials are trying to determine where and how the fire started.

Galbraith says the hospital's sprinkler system worked properly and the fire was controlled as about 30 firefighters arrived. Other patients in the 30-bed, long-term care unit were moved to other parts of the hospital.

The names of the victims have not yet been released.

Some other patients were moved because of flooding caused by the sprinklers.

Durham Regional is a 369-bed acute care hospital.
