A former substitute teacher in Pitt County is in custody, accused of multiple sex crimes with a 14-year old female student.
Christopher Rhodes is charged with indecent liberties with a minor and first degree statutory sex offense. According to Pitt County schools, the 28-year-old served as as substitute teacher since December 2011 before he was suspended on January 3rd. Captain Paula Dance with The Pitt County Sheriff's Office says she can't confirm whether or not the incidents took place on school grounds, or if Rhodes was a substitute teacher in any of the girl's classes. She says it's a difficult case for law enforcement to work with.
"Most of us have children and certainly can empathize with parents who are finding out that people who you trust or that you entrust your children to, would be the perpetrators of these types of crimes," said Captain Dance.
School system spokesperson Heather Mayo says Rhodes worked at 7 different schools across Pitt County over the last year. He is jailed on a $500,000 bond.
