Car Catches Fire After Hitting Pitt County Home

A car ran off a Pitt County highway Tuesday afternoon, struck a house and then caught fire.

It happened at the intersection of Highway 903 and Brevard Road, outside of Winterville around 12:30 p.m.

Troopers say charges are pending against the driver of the Mercury Marquis which left Highway 903, jumped through several ditches before hitting the house on the side street. The Highway Patrol says they are investigating whether a medical condition caused the crash.

The car struck a rear bedroom of the home and then caught fire. The driver was able to get out of the car and was taken to Vidant Medical Center.

No one was home at the time and neighbors are still trying to locate the owner. The exterior of the home was damaged by the crash as well as some fire damage.

Highway 903 was closed for more than an hour because of the accident.
