Authorities believe a Bumcombe County man died in a house fire after shooting at deputies who helped get a female resident of the home to safety.
Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Natalie Bailey says remains found in the Swannanoa home are believed to be 57-year-old Thomas Roberts. His family has been notified. An autopsy will determine cause of death.
Bailey says deputies responded to a domestic disturbance at the home about 8 p.m. Friday. After the female was outside, deputies were fired upon but did not return fire. Bailey says flames engulfed the home shortly afterward. The fire did not spread beyond the home.
The investigation continues.
