Athletes, Coaches Find Ways To Beat The Heat

As young athletes hit the fields this summer, exposure to the heat and humidity can put them in danger.

WITN stopped by Barnet Park in Kinston Wednesday to talk with softball players in action during the Eastern Carolina Babe Ruth Tournament. According to our meteorologists, Kinston had a high of 90 degrees at 12:00 p.m.

It felt more like 99 with the heat index and the coaches said have a game plan to keep the players cool. Around the dugouts, coaches had water, buckets of water and fans at easy reach.

It's all to prevent heat illness. The CDC says heat illness is the leading cause of death and disability among young U.S. athletes.

"We keep the kids hydrated. Get them to stay in the shade," said coach Brian Kirby. "Today they have us playing basically- We play at 10:00, at 12:00, and again at 2:00. So we're staying pretty busy trying to keep the kids hydrated and in the shade."

Symptoms of heat exhaustion include tiredness, nausea, vomiting, headaches, muscle cramps and dizziness.

Heat stroke is a little different; symptoms include poor coordination or confusion, sweat soaked, pale skin, and seizures. If you experience those symptoms, doctors recommend heading to the Emergency Room.
