Appeals Court Upholds Dog Mauling Conviction

An appeals court has upheld the conviction of a Graham County woman in prison for a pit bull attack that left her grandson in critical condition.

The Asheville Citizen-Times reports (http://avlne.ws/11ZBvFH) that the N.C. Court of Appeals on Friday affirmed 53-year-old Susie Anderson's felony child abuse conviction.

Anderson was sentenced to at least two years in prison last year. Two-year-old Mathyis Smith was attacked in November 2010 by at least four dogs as he played in the front yard of the family's home in Robbinsville. Residents who rushed to help shot two of the dogs.

Social workers made three visits to the home before the mauling to investigate reports that the boy was living in unsafe conditions. The latest report came just days before the animals attacked.
