US-64 Alligator River Bridge Open For Monday Commute

Just after midnight Sunday, the Department of Transportation said the 90 mile detour for some commuters was over.

While the Alligator River Bridge in Dare and Tyrrell Counties was scheduled to reopen Sunday, the DOT said some parts broke during repair work and the reopening would have to be pushed back.

However, at 12:17 a.m. on Monday, the NCDOT said the bridge was open.

Crews will be taking down detour signage Monday.

Previous Story:

The Alligator River Bridge in Dare and Tyrrell Counties which was scheduled to reopen Sunday, will remain closed for the time being.

The NC Department of Transportation says that a part used to keep the bridge closed and supports the weight of vehicles, broke during repairs. Crews are working to find replacement parts, however the part may have to be custom made if a replacement is not located, which may delay the reopening a few days.

The U.S. 64 bridge had been undergoing repairs for the past 2 weeks on the draw bridge portion.
