Mother Arrested For False Report About Daughter Being Kidnapped


Deputies have officially charged the mother who they say lied about her daughter being kidnapped by the girl's father, who took the child to Beaufort County.

Lincoln County deputies charged Mary Bowen of Lincolnton with filing a false report.

An Amber Alert was issued Sunday night for 3-year-old Christina Koonce.

Bowen told deputies Troy Koonce, who she identified as her cousin and ex-boyfriend, kidnapped the child from a home in the western part of our state. She told them he was not the biological father of the child, according to her arrest warrant.

Koonce, who is listed as the child's father on her birth certificate, was arrested by Beaufort County deputies on a kidnapping charge. Today that charge was dropped by the district attorney in Lincoln County.

Bowen was jailed on a $10,000 secured bond.

Bowen says Koonce brought the girl back to his home in Washington when she refused to return with him.

Deputies say they will meet with the district attorney to have kidnapping charges against Koonce dropped.

Charges are expected to be filed against Bowen for lying to investigators.

The man accused of kidnapping a three-year-old from the western part of the state talks to WITN, claiming he did not kidnap his child.

Troy Koonce is now out on bond after Beaufort County authorities arrested him early Monday morning for kidnapping.

Koonce says he is the father of the little girl and has a right to bring the child to eastern North Carolina, since there is no permanent custody order.

Koonce claims his ex-girlfriend and mother of the three-year-old actually placed the child in his vehicle Sunday afternoon so the child could return to Washington, NC from Lincoln County with him. He says after an argument with his ex that night, he believes she called the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office.

Koonce says that he heard about the amber alert for his daughter and called 9-1-1 to let authorities know where he and the child were staying and that's when he was arrested.

Authorities in Lincolnton in Lincoln county say Mary Bowen, the child's mother and their two other kids moved to Lincolnton about a week ago.

She told authorities there that Mr. Koonce showed up at her residence Sunday afternoon around 3:00 p.m. Ms.Bowen told Mr. Koonce that she would not return to Washington, NC with him and at that point he placed the child in the van and left.

Koonce was released on a $20,000 bond and will face a judge in Lincoln county in the coming days.

A man has been charged with kidnapping in Beaufort County after a statewide Amber Alert was issued late last night.

Troy Koonce was arrested in Beaufort County and remains in jail.

The Amber Alert for 3-year-old Christian Koonce of Lincoln County was issued around 11:40 p.m. Sunday. It was cancelled less than 90 minutes later when the girl was found safe in Washington.

Lincoln County is northwest of Charlotte.

Deputies in Lincoln County say the child's mother told them that Koonce took the girl by force.

Mary Bowen told authorities she and her children moved to Lincolnton about a week ago and that Koonce showed up around 3:00 p.m. The mother said she told Koonce that she would not return to Beaufort County and at that point he took the child.

Koonce is charged with kidnapping and is in jail on a $20,000 bond and Bowen is en route to Beaufort County to pickup the child.
