Keeping Traffic Lights On During Power Outage

After Hurricane Ophelia knocked out power to a good portion of the city of Jacksonville in 2005, police captain Tim Acres had an idea to make sure it didn't happen again.

Acres suggested putting small generators at key intersections in the city to control traffic during a hurricane, or other major storm event. The generators are now installed at three major thoroughfares in the city. Nine more major intersections will also be equipped with the $3,000 alternative power devices.

The Jacksonville police department was able to complete this project on major highways through an agreement with the division of transportation.
