OLF Meeting

The Navy is out with a list of six alternative OLF sites. Two of those sites are in Gates County.

Monday night, the Gates County Commissioners held an informational meeting in the Gates County courthouse.

The majority of those at the meeting say they are opposed to an OLF. They're mostly concerned about what it would mean for property values.

The Navy was not at the meeting. Gates County officials hope to talk with them later this week.

I hope the politicians get onboard with the people who elected them. Suggest the Navy build this necessary facility some place the local people want/need it.

Agree with Brad, if there is a landing field at Camp Davis, then bring it up to standard and use it. Even the government needs too cut back on spending. After all we have spent money on a war in Iraq that was costly in both money and life.

While I understand the concerns of those who live in these areas I also understand the need. I grew up outside of a military base and am the daughter of a retired marine. I almost find it offensive that it seems to be okay that these training sites be placed anywhere but "where we live"! Everyone wants thier neighborhood to be the "quite, peaceful" area and nobody likes change but lets face it, if they don't ever get the area to train how do you expect the armed forces to be able to protect you as you EXPECT them to? If there are dangers in the area that is one thing but just because you don't want to hear the noise is a different story. It is because of the military you have the freedom to choose where to live. I think it is about time we support our military for all the things they do for us!

What a bunch of hypocrits....with your yellow ribbons, and "we support our troops" stickers.....i guess that's as long as they don't train near your home.

Why are they trying to build a new airstrip for olf when they can use the old Camp Davis landing field that is not in use at Holley Ridge. I know, that would save to much money! Were the Goverment we do not need to save money.

I DONT WANT TO SEE ANOTHER MILITARY INSTALATION IN ONSLOW COUNTY. WE ALREADY HAVE OVER 100,000 ACRES OFF THE TAX BASE. THAT JUST ADDS MORE TO THE PROPERTY OWNERS BACKS
