An editorial published in the medical journal "Lancet" strongly discourages pregnant women from planning home births.

The authors point to recent research that found home births to be quite safe for moms, but potentially risky for babies.

The main problem is when the baby has trouble breathing, and cannot be resuscitated without hospital equipment.

Home births account for about 1-percent of deliveries in the US.

i think its ok to have your baby at home. my experience in pitt co. hospital was terrible, i was treated like a moronic invalid by many of the nurses (though some were great). however, be prepared to have to handle anything; being in the hospital gives you more of an assurance that your baby will be alright if it does something like breathe meconium (sp?) or gets stuck, or has a cord around its neck that prevents it from being born. you cant foresee these things so just have the knowlege, equipment and be prepared for anything.

Yes, prior to 1950 most babies were born at home. However, due to ALL the complications and maternal AND baby deaths from home deliveries, new recommendations were made to encourage hospital deliveries. When emergency equipment is needed, you don't always have time to wait for EMS. We learn from the past and change our recommendations based on medical knowledge and advancement.

My daughter recently had a child at the hospital and thankfully it was a hospital delivery. She developed HELLP Syndrome and was very sick, was on the ventilator and in ICU for several days and in the hospital for two weeks after the birth of my grandchild. I am in agreement that home births are not safe. Ladies please do not put your families through the stress of having children at home. Had my daughter not been in a hospita she wouldn't be here with us today.
