Hundreds of mourners attended a funeral service and parade in Indiana for a soldier based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, who was one of seven U.S. soldiers killed in a vehicle accident last week in Iraq.
Sergeant Nicholas Patterson was a 2001 graduate of Rochester, Indiana, High School. He was a member of the 82nd Airborne Division. He was on his second tour of duty in Iraq.
The Reverend Steve Fleck told mourners yesterday that Patterson had a tough exterior and a tender heart.
Hundreds of people stood on the streets of downtown Rochester as
Patterson's body was escorted to the funeral service at the high school and then to Akron Cemetery for burial.
Dozens of floral tributes lined the hallway to the school's gymnasium. A quilt was placed on a table for friends to sign.
