Detours Ahead For Ocracoke Island

It may be a tough winter to get around Ocracoke Island, this as seven bridges on the island are going to be replaced at once.

Detours for the $8-million project will begin January 2nd, and the state DOT says they will end no later than March 15th.

While the detour is in place, traffic on the north end of the island will be limited to four-wheel-drive vehicles and detoured onto the beach. The DOT will also adjust the ferry schedules for the Hatteras-Ocracoke and Swan Quarter-Ocracoke routes to accommodate the closure.

The state says the bridges on Highway 12 are approaching the end of their design life, and the new bridges will be wider to accommodate bicycle traffic.

An information meeting on the replacement project will be held next Wednesday, September 26th, starting at 7 p.m.at the Ocracoke Community Center on Highway 12.
