A state investigation is under way into allegations whether students were abused or neglected at the North Carolina School for the Deaf in Morganton.
Health and Human Services Secretary Lanier Cansler announced on Friday a team of people from inside and outside the agency will conduct the probe. The investigation follows a report that the advocacy group Disability Rights North Carolina presented to Cansler earlier this week.
The report alleged two students were assaulted by teachers, while another student was restrained with excessive force by a staff member. The report said staff at the state-run residential school failed to investigate the allegations properly and alert social services to possible abuse.
The department said school director Janet McDaniel was suspended with pay during the investigation, which could last at least 30 days.

Anon,@2:25pm: and just what do you recommend happening to these people, put them out on the street. I will assume that none of your loved ones are in such schools.
According to a state auditor's report, it costs more than $60,000 per year per student at these state schools for the deaf. Yet most students graduate without knowing how to read and just live off of welfare for their lives! What a waste. More abuse stories like at the Wilson school-which their school director was recently arrested and jailed for sexually assaulting a staff member. They should close these abusive places and save us all millions of dollars every year!
If that is true? FIRE EVERY SINGLE JERK IN THAT BUILDING!!!!
