Alvin B. Taylor began his career at The Daily Reflector of Greenville in 1943 as a paper boy. He retired as senior associate editor in 1996, but continued to contribute columns and editorials until last month.
Taylor died Monday night after a brief illness at the age of 78. A funeral service is scheduled for Thursday morning.
After graduating in 1951 from East Carolina Teachers College, he was drafted into the Army and spent 16 months in Korea. He returned to the Daily Reflector when his military stint ended and his first byline appeared in October 1953.
He was named city editor, then managing editor. Taylor became senior associate editor in 1990, a position he held full-time and later part-time until his retirement.
Taylor is survived by two brothers, their wives and several nephews and nieces.
