The Department of Defense says the paratrooper who died in a training accident at Fort Bragg earlier this week was a veteran of the war in Iraq.

Sergeant Brandon H. Patterson of Urbandale, Iowa, was pronounced
dead Thursday when he arrived at Womack Army Medical Center.

He had been a passenger in a truck loaded with soldiers that
apparently crashed into a tree and injured 25 of his fellow
soldiers. They were returning to their barracks after a training
exercise.

Patterson was a 28-year-old infantryman. The Defense Department
says today he joined the Army in May 2002 and was assigned to the
82nd Airborne Division after basic training.

Ten soldiers of the unit remain in hospitals.
