Fire Hits Lost Colony Theater

Part of The Lost Colony's Waterside Theater went up in flames this morning. Fire destroyed the theater's costume shop and maintenance shed.

The theater says a resident spotted flames from across the sound and called 911 around 12:30 am.

Lost in the Irene Rains Costume Shop were all of the show costumes, all of the historic costumes, and all of the fabrics, shoes and hats stored there. The only thing saved are the court costumes which were at the dry cleaners.

No other structures appeared to have been damaged and the theater says the Nags Head resident who reported the fire saved the theater.

Sixty years ago a late afternoon fire destroyed two-thirds of the Waterside Theater and most of the sets and props. The costumes in the 1947 disaster escaped the flames, however, because of costumer Irene Rains' quick action in removing them from the dressing rooms and casting the items on the shore.

The Lost Colony is establishing a fund to replace the destroyed costumes. Click for more information.
