Cherry Point Headquarters Building Damaged In Fire

A massive fire overnight heavily damaged the Headquarters Building at Cherry Point Marine Corps Air Station.

Flames tore through the second floor of the building just after 11 pm Saturday night.

Two Marines reported smelling smoke after 9 pm, but no fire was discovered.

The headquarters building is where the air station's operations take place. It also houses the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing.

The air station says no Marines or firefighters were injured. There's no cause yet, but Marines say there's no suspicion of foul play.

Cherry point commanders say they'll continue to operate normally and they've spread out operations throughout several parts of the base. They don't know if any parts of the building can be salvaged.

It was a horrible fire. There was one firefigher who got minor injuries, he is out of the hospital and back at home now. He got hit by a hose spray but it doing better. Good job to all the firefighthers who came and helped!

My husband worked in this building. All I can say is thank God this didn't happen during working hours when the building was full of both Marines and civilians.
