New rules about overtime pay went into effect Monday, and the changes could affect millions.

The new law revokes overtime pay for some workers. The law takes overtime away from those defined as executive, administrative, professional, and outside sales employees. The law does not protect overtime rights for some of these white collar workers.

The U.S. Department of Labor says the Fair Labor Standards Act will guarantee overtime pay for workers who earn less than $23, 660 a year or $455 a week. The department says the new rule strengthens overtime rights for more than 6,000,000 American workers.

Labor groups say around 6,000,000 workers could lose their benefits. But the Labor Department says the number is closer to 100,000 with many more gaining overtime protections.
