ECU Quarterback Rob Kass Suspended For Season Opener

East Carolina sophomore quarterback Rob Kass has been suspended for Saturday's season-opener against No. 9 Virginia Tech for a violation of team policy according to an announcement from head coach Skip Holtz Tuesday afternoon.

Kass, who was expected to make his first collegiate start against the Hokies, experienced action in five games as a redshirt freshman in 2006 where he completed 14-of-30 passes for 184 yards. He enjoyed his top contest against USF in the Papajohns.com Bowl last December, throwing for a game-high 138 yards on 10 completions.

"There is an expectation of conduct associated with being a member of this football program," Holtz said. "I regret anytime we are put in a position to take disciplinary action but we take the responsibility of representing East Carolina University seriously.”

After serving as James Pinkney's top backup last season, Kass had earned the early nod as the Pirates' starter at the conclusion of spring drills.

"Suspensions are reviewed by the athletics administration to ensure that departmental and university policies are applied consistently for similar violations in all sports," ECU Director of Athletics Terry Holland added. "Of course, prior violations and other extenuating circumstances are part of the consideration."

Its called Politics. Athletics are huge funding source for ECU and the Pirate Club donates tens of thousands of dollars each year. The last thing that ECU wants is another losing season after they have just had a sell out season. If it would have been the third string kicker that got a DWI, he would have been become the water boy until he graduated.

It seems as if Rob Kass is going to get off scott free as far as the college is concerned. Suspended for one game? Are our student athletes above it all? What kind of a lesson does this teach Rob Kass, or the rest of the team? Win at all costs? Is that what we teach today? It's time to make an example out of someone, this type of action has got to stop. This goes way beyond the game, far beyond college, this is the game of life we're, or should I say ECU's athletic Dept is playing with here. I sure hope they show Rob that they really do care about what happens to him. People please, don't get me wrong, I don't want to see Rob Kass kicked off the team, we all make mistakes, this was one, a serious one. One year off the team, along with, no practice, no scholarship. All for a one year period.

With all ECU has in place to accommodate students to prevent intoxicated driving Mr Kass violated the law, endangered the public and violated the rules for athletes. He deserved much harsher punishment. What has happened to respect. Does no one respect the institutions they represent anymore?

This should be a wake up call to all those who drink and drive. It would only make sense to stop and think to yourself, Geez, maybe I have had a little too much to drink tonite and should call a cab. People, The total cost of getting a DWI can be as much as 1,500 dollars or more, let alone you could injure yourself or others. Take a cab, so much cheaper and safer. THINK !!!!!!!!!!
