Fighting Heart Disease in Eastern Carolina

It's a problem facing many Eastern Carolinians. In fact, cardiovascular disease is now one of the leading killers of both men and women. In our region, the Eastern 29 counties lead the state in poor heart health.

That's why Governor Mike Easley recently signed into law Bill Number 1264 granting $60 million in start-up funds for a new cardiovascular disease institute to be built in Greenville. But some dietitians say the issues of cardiovascular disease and poor heart health in general can be avoided by taking a few simple steps.

It starts with your local grocery store. Dieticians recommend you shop the outside perimeter of the store where all the fresh produce and healthier foods are located. This will help you avoid the processed foods. The completion of the new cardiovascular institute is a few years off. Opening is slated for the year 2008.
